The last of a six-part series of zoological exploration On the Scorpion Reef
The expedition camps for a month on a sand spit 1,000-yards long in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. Their bird neighbours are nesting boobies and noddies. Migrant land birds use the island as a hotel on their way south.
The reef itself, built over the last 5,000 years by nature's greatest architects, the coral polyps, is far more than a submarine platform of living coral. It is a bustling community of wild creatures, staggering in their numbers and diversity.
