A full length feature starring James Garner as Jim Rockford, an amiable private eye with a nose for trouble and a talent for solving cases the police have marked 'closed'.
Rockford is hired by Warner Jameson, a rich businessman who has strong reservations about his only daughter's husband-to-be, Mark Chalmers. A flying visit to Newark provides Rockford with no information but plenty of frustration, combined with invitations to leave town. When he returns to California he is the quarry, not the pursuer.
