With only minutes to go to the planned moment of link-up between Soyuz and Apollo, space correspondent Reg Turnill in America, and John Craven in the Newsround studio, present a live report on the background to this historic meeting in space.

Why did Russia and America decide to co-operate instead of competing with each other? What is the future for space travel now?

The Docking
Live coverage of the tensest minutes of the Apollo/ Soyuz Mission as the two spacecraft inch towards a meeting 138 miles above Europe. The docking is more than the connection of two objects in space. It represents the merging of two technologies into a single living space for five men.

The climax of the ten-day Mission as astronauts TOM STAFFORD and DEKE SLAYTON Swing open the last hatch in the Docking Module and reach out to greet Soviet cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valeri Kubasov.
James Burke introduces the live coverage with the aid of a full-scale replica of the docked spacecraft.
The political detail is filled in by film interviews with senior administrators of both programmes.
Dr James C. Fletcher (NASA) and Prof Boris Petrov (Chairman of the Intercosmos Committee of the Soviet Academy of Sciences) explain how this once unthinkable event came not only to be thinkable but a necessary part of the Nixon-Kosygin detente agreement.
