Golf: The Open Championship 1973
Played over The Old Course, Troon, where 11 years ago this week that legendary figure of modern professional golf, Arnold Palmer, won his second consecutive British Open Championship. In so doing he established the record low winning aggregate score for the Championship: 276 (71, 69, 67, 69) which stands to this day.
The illustrious field of about 150 golfers includes the defending Champion Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Doug Sanders, Gary Player, Bob Charles, Britain's Tony Jacklin and Peter Oosterhuis, and the new US Open Champion Johnny Miller. Today they set out with Palmer on their quest for this year's title plus the £50,000 prize money; they will do well even to equal that score over a course regarded as one of the supreme tests of world golf.

The award-winning Private Life of the Starling

The starling is the commonest and most successful bird in the world. Why is it so numerous? Is it the farmer's friend or foe? Why does it spray its feathers with formic acid? Why does it commute to big cities for the night? What is the purpose of its 'sunset spectacular' when three million birds give the most impressive exhibition of aerobatics that can be seen in the whole world of birds?

British observers back from the longest solar eclipse of the century tell Patrick Moore about the results of their experiments. These astronomers went to see totality from widely different viewpoints - Dr John Beckman from Concorde, Dr R. J. Speer from a rocket site in West Africa, Barrie Jones from the shore of Lake Rudolf, and observers from ships at sea and the Sahara desert.
