Golf: The Open Championship 1973
Played over The Old Course, Troon, where 11 years ago this week that legendary figure of modern professional golf, Arnold Palmer, won his second consecutive British Open Championship. In so doing he established the record low winning aggregate score for the Championship: 276 (71, 69, 67, 69) which stands to this day.
The illustrious field of about 150 golfers includes the defending Champion Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Doug Sanders, Gary Player, Bob Charles, Britain's Tony Jacklin and Peter Oosterhuis, and the new US Open Champion Johnny Miller. Today they set out with Palmer on their quest for this year's title plus the £50,000 prize money; they will do well even to equal that score over a course regarded as one of the supreme tests of world golf.
