America's Randy Matson, 1968 Olympic champion and world record holder, misses Munich. He failed in the US Olympic trials which put him out of the team.

3.20 Long Jump Final (Men)
One of the biggest certainties of the Games is that Bob Beamon's world record 29ft 21in in Mexico's rarefied atmosphere will not be beaten. This time the gold will be won at closer to the 27ft mark.

4 x 400m Relay (Men). Semi-finals
Lee Evans, who won the Mexico 400m gold, came fourth in the American trials, which cost him his place in the individual event. But Lee, still rated by many as the finest 400m ace of them all, will be running in the relay team...

Peter Stewart, Britain's brightest hope in the 1500m, had to drop out of the team at the last moment through sciatica trouble.

4 x 100m Relay (Women). Semi-finals
Britain have twice taken the silver medal in this event - at Berlin in 1936 and at Melbourne in 1956.
