The Eastern Europeans and Ilona Gusenbauer, of Austria, head the rankings; but Britain's Barbara Inkpen and Debbie Brill, of Canada, have the ability to beat the world.

1500m (Women). Heats
The reintroduction of the women's 800m into the Olympic programme in 1960 gave girls the chance to prove they can survive at the longer distances. Now, for the first time, women have the chance to run an Olympic 1500m.
Triple Jump Final (Men)
Britain's last world-ranking triple-jumper was Fred Alsop. The British record he set in 1964-54ft - still stands.

Can anyone stop the Eastern Europeans in this event? Poland's Irena Szewinska won in 1968 with a world record 22.5secs and is again high in the rankings, which are headed by East Germany's Renate Stecher (22.6secs).
3000m Steeplechase Final (Men)
Christopher Brasher, now a broadcaster and journalist, won the gold for Britain in this event at Melbourne in 1956. This another British record held by Dave Bedford in 8min 28.6secs. Olympic champion: A. Biwott (Kenya) Olympic record: 8mins 30.8secs

With Jamaica's Marilyn Neufville out through injury, the East German girl Monika Zehrt becomes the one the others know they must beat. Monika has run Slsecs this year to share the world record with Marilyn.

David Jenkins bids for a place in Wednesday's final in one of the most competitive track events of the Games.
200m Final (Men)
Gold medallist Tommie Smith (USA) accelerated to a world record through the various rounds of the 200m at Mexico. Olympic champion: T. Smith (USA) Olympic record: 19.8secs
