with Paul Jones
This week's stories are all about birds - a different one every day. You can hear the sad tale of a goose with no feathers, a story about a pigeon who gets stolen from Trafalgar Square, and one about a penguin who stows away on a ship and comes to London. On Thursday there are the adventures of two pelicans from St James's Park and on Friday a story about an owl who saves some people from a burning house.

Genetic engineering can alter the shape, personality and intelligence of a human being, even before it is born: by tampering with nature we can make Superman. Today, we experiment on lesser animals, like... the rat.

Products - ideas - techniques
Nottingham's lace market, once at the heart of the industry in Britain, exists now only in name. Most of the small firms have disappeared over the years through economic pressure, changing tastes and fashion. But Nottingham is still regarded as the home of lace although some production takes place outside the area. Last year almost half of the industry's wares went abroad, at times reaching deep into areas which Britain's competitors once regarded as sacrosanct.
