In March this year a British expedition set off on an attempt to climb the highest mountain in the world by its most hazardous route. Only one other attempt has been made on the north-east ridge of Everest - the fateful
British Expedition in 1982 led by Chris Bonington. This time the 18-strong team was lead by Scots mountaineer Mal Duff and included two film-makers - award-winning cameraman Kurt Diemberger
- internationally recognised as one of the best climbers of his generation - and his sound assistant Julie Tullis - Britain's highest-climbing woman. They have produced a riveting record of the trials and tribulations of this major mountaineering ascent. Producer MARY CLYNE

Do you remember your first car, or was it a motorcycle?
Better still, do you remember your dream car at that time? Now it is probably a collector's item and it's name is wrapped in nostalgia with those of Campbell, Cobb, Austin, Morris and Alvis.
And what of your memory? When was the 70 mph speed limit introduced? Where were the first traffic lights situated? What was the first speed limit? How did the early motorist buy fuel?
A stirring of the emotions assured in this look at a century of motoring history. Written by JONATHAN WOOD Research by MAGDA GULVIN Directors

(A compilation of two programmes broadcast in May)
A look back to the days of Pathe and Movietone newsreels with Bob Danvers Walker and Leslie Mitchell in conversation with Su Ingle. For more than 50 years the British cinemagoer was given a window on the world by the seven-minute newsreel. With the aid of original - and sometimes rare - footage, the two legendary newsreel commentators recall the friendly rivalry between the companies to get that all-important 'scoop', and give a fascinating personal account of those historic, poignant and humorous world events which were brought to the people in the one-and-nines - almost as they happened.
This programme was Leslie Mitchell's last appearance before his death in November and provides a fitting tribute to a man whose distinctive voice and imperturbable manner made him a much respected figure in broadcasting.

continues the season of films by Orson Welles who died in October. Today starring Joseph Cotten
Agnes Moorhead
For his second feature,
Welles stayed behind the camera creating a film even more personal, and of comparable originality, to his debut. Booth Tarkington's story of the rise and fall of a great American family is shown as a faded glory of a vanished America and as a microcosm of a doomed society. The film boasts magnificent performances and superb photography by Stanley Cortez.
