For Thomas Hardy 's old string players, barrel-organs marked the downfall of musical religion. ' Harmonions and barrel-organs," said old William Dewy , excited, be miserable-what shall I call 'em?—miserable dumbledores! '
But church barrel-organs that survive today have their own charm for us; and at Shelland Church in Suffolk the barrel-organ still provides the accompaniment.
