Allegri Quartet: Eli Goren (violin)
James Barton (violin) Patrick Ireland (viola) William Pleeth (cello)
by Lucie Manen
In her autobiography Mein Weg Lilli Lehmann, who included in her repertoire four of the five soprano roles in Mozart's Figaro, claimed that she varied her vocal quality to suit each role. Lucie Manen offers an explanation, based on her own researches, of how these changes were effected, and suggests reasons why this important aspect of vocal technique is neglected by singers of the present time, illustrating her argument personally and with records.
