This is the second of four programmes, based on Professor Lewis's recent researches into medieval Islamic literature, in which he introduces selected readings to illustrate the growth of Muslim knowledge of Europe.
The first two programmes, dealing with the periods preceding and following the Crusades, were first broadcast in 1955.
