The Harvey Phillips String Orchestra (Leader, Alan Loveday)

Frank Martin originally wrote his Passacaille for organ, in 1944, and arranged it for string orchestra in 1952: this version, which is dedicated to Karl Munchinger and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, was first broadcast in the Third Programme two years ago, when it was played by the Harvey Phillips String Orchestra.
The Symphony for string orchestra by Jean Francaix was first performed in this country in a Third Programme concert, conducted by Nadia Boulanger, in 1949; it is in four movements.
