Unaccompanied Madrigals
The Deller Consort:
In early seventeenth-century Italy, long-established vocal forms such as the madrigal and motet were radically transformed and several new forms - opera, oratorio, and cantata among them - emerged: this new music was founded on the recently invented basso continuo and was generally more dramatic in character. The changes are vividly displayed in the music of Monteverdi, the most universal composer of the age; this group of four programmes also shows that other composers of the time were equally at home in various aspects of the new style.
