The latest volume to appear in the Oxford History of English Art is English Art, 1625-1714, by M. Whinney and 0. Millar. The book's central problem is ' the English reaction to the full baroque style of the Continent.' The speaker discusses this theme -with special reference to the unusual opportunity of seeing a full selection of the painting of the period now made available by the exhibition of British Portraits at the Royal Academy.

Little attempt has been made by historians of architecture to consider classical buildings in terms of the materials and methods used in their construction. In his first talk the speaker examines the change that came over Roman architecture between about A.D. 60 and A.D. 130 with the increasingly assured use of Roman concrete. ' What in effect had been achieved during this astonishingly short period was nothing less than the turning inside out of the traditional Greek idea of architecture.'
