For Victorian Broad Churchmen like Jowett and Dean Farrar, the new literary criticism of the Bible was primarily a means of brushing aside irrelevant accretions and establishing the plain meaning of the words. Today the critic's function is valued even more highly, but the scope of his activities has changed. He has become once again 'a solver of riddles,' intent on discovering the hidden or true meaning of his text.
