David Lytton writes: 'The subject of this play has been under discussion now for one thousand nine hundred and fifty-five years, and the problems it raises are no nearer solution.... It has been quite simply summarised in the prayer Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us. There is nothing equivocal about this, and yet, when the opportunities arise for us to practise what we pray, we continue to admire the virtue but we do otherwise. We demand both eyes for the one we lost that we may continue to conduct ourselves as kings in the wilderness of the blind ... '
