This is a broadcast version of the inaugural lecture, De Descriptione Temporum, by the Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English Literature in the University of Cambridge. Mr. Lewis considers the divisions that are usually made in European history-the one between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, for example-and argues that the Great Divide comes after the age of Jane Austen and Scott.
