Berthold Goldschmidt, who was born in Hamburg, has been living in this country since 1935. In the Arts Council Festival of Britain competition he was awarded a prize for his opera Beatrice Cenci; excerpts from this were broadcast last year. His Violin Concerto also received its first performance in a Third Programme broadcast in January. His Cello Concerto, composed in 1953, has four movements: Quodlibet (containing six themes of equal importance), Caprice mélancolique, and Sarabande, leading directly into the final Tarantella. H.R.

Most of our national collections of plants, as well as many private gardens, have been enriched by the botanical expeditions of the Kingdon-Wards. On a recent expedition to North Burma they collected 1,200 species of dried plants, 165 specimens of seeds, and some thirty or forty specimens of living plants, as well as discovering much fresh geographical information.
