Berthold Goldschmidt, who was born in Hamburg, has been living in this country since 1935. In the Arts Council Festival of Britain competition he was awarded a prize for his opera Beatrice Cenci; excerpts from this were broadcast last year. His Violin Concerto also received its first performance in a Third Programme broadcast in January. His Cello Concerto, composed in 1953, has four movements: Quodlibet (containing six themes of equal importance), Caprice mélancolique, and Sarabande, leading directly into the final Tarantella. H.R.
