Berthold Goldschmidt has written a number of large-scaie works including the opera Beatrice Cenci (awarded a prize in the Arts Council's Festival of Britain Competition). His Violin Concerto,tonight receiving its first performance, was completed in 1952 A short introduction leads into a brisk Allegro; tihe slow movement is marked Andante amoroso; rhe finale is a graceful Gigue which (in the words of the composer) ` ends on a whimsical note.'

Norman Gibbs, Ohichele Professor of Military History at Oxford, comments on it in the perspective of the many campaigns over the same territory in which Great Britain has been involved during several centuries.
