William Primrose (viola)
Ernest Lush (piano) lain Hamilton composed his Viola Sonata in the summer of 1950, beginning it in Salzburg and completing it on his return to England; most of it, however, w*s written during a visit to Munich and was influenced by the atmosphere of the ruined city: towards the end of the work there is a quotation from Wagner's Die Meistersinger. The sonata, which is dedicated to William Primrose, is tonight receiving its first performance. The movements are: Lento potente, leading to Allegro feroce; Adagio (which follows without a break); and Allegro, closing Allegro marcia funebre.
