BBC Scottish Orchestra
(Leader, J. Mouland Begbie)
Conducted by Berthold Goldschmidt

Ildebrando Pizzetti, who last month celebrated his seventy-second birthday, wrote his Three Preludes to Oedipus Rex in 1904. They were commissioned for a performance of Sophocles' tragedy at the Teatro Olimpia in Milan.
Howard Ferguson's Partita, which was written in 1937, exists in two versions, one for two pianos and this one for orchestra; though neither can be said to be an arrangement of the other, each being separately conceived for its medium. There are four movements: - Allegretto pesante (preceded by a slow and sombre introducion); Allegro un poco agitato; Andante un poco mosso; and Allegro con spirito.
