When John Stuart Mill 's Essay on Liberty was published a hundred years ago it evoked as much criticism as praise. One of its sharpest critics was the eminent Victorian jurist James Fitzjames Stephen. To mark the centenary of the publication of the Essay, Maurice Cranston has written an imaginary conversation on the subject between Mill and his most distinguished adversary.
