Professor Delargy writes: 'The folk tale still lives in Ireland and Western Scotland, but in most parts of Britain no one can listen to a genuine orally-preserved tale which has not come from a printed source in recent times. So this is probably the first time that English-speaking people of this generation have ever had afforded them the opportunity of hearing a storyteller telling a traditional tale in English.'
