In 1945 Vannevar Bush , reporting to President Roosevelt on the scientific resources of the U.S.A., pointed out that American pre-eminence in technology was in danger. Wartime concentration on applied science had seriously curtailed work on fundamental problems. In this talk Alfred Schenkman , until recently Teaching Fellow in Social Sciences at Harvard, comments on the steps taken during the last five years to meet this situation.
