The Irish Storyteller: Manus

on Third Programme

View in Radio Times

'...So when he went into the forest he met with this man called Manus, and Manus says to Jack, 'Jack,' he says, 'what about a game of cards...'
A folk tale told by Paddy Sherlock, chimney sweep, of County Clare, Ireland
With an introduction by Professor J.H. Delargy of the Irish Folklore Commission
Produced by David Thomson
First of a series of six programmes
To be repeated tomorrow
August 1
Professor Delargy writes: 'The folk tale still lives in Ireland and Western Scotland, but in most parts of Britain no one can listen to a genuine orally-preserved tale which has not come from a printed source in recent times. So this is probably the first time that English-speaking people of this generation have ever had afforded them the opportunity of hearing a storyteller telling a traditional tale in English.'
Followed by an interlude at 9.0
