Alfred Van Dam became a violinist in the orchestra of the Royal Carl Rosa Opera Company at the age of seventeen, after studying at the Guildhall School of Music.
At eighteen he had his own orchestra and seven or eight years ago was appointed conductor of the Trocadero Cinema Orchestra, Elephant and Castle. He stayed there until the Kilburn State Cinema opened in December, 1937, when he was put in charge of the State Orchestra of twelve players.
