A Recital by Hope Hanson (harp) and James Wilkinson (bass-baritone)
Accompanist, Dorothy Crewe
Hope Hanson, who comes to the microphone again this afternoon, wanted to play the harp at the age of six when she was considered too small. She actually acquired her first harp at the age of eight, and even then had to stand up to play it. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Gwendolen Mason, where she obtained the Julia Leney Prize, bronze and silver medals, and the Certificate of Merit. Since leaving the Academy she has had considerable concert and recital experience, and has also done a good deal of orchestral work including engagements with many of the country's leading operatic societies.
James Wilkinson's appearance at the microphone today precedes by a day or two his second appearance this season at Queen's Hall, when he is taking part in the L.N.E.R. Musical Society's annual concert. Wilkinson is well known in Yorkshire, and particularly in Bradford, his native town, where a few months ago he returned to sing in Messiah at Horton Lane Congregational Church. This afternoon he will be singing two songs by Frank Tapp that are being broadcast for the first time.
