Leslie Heward , who comes from Yorkshire, was born in 1898. He received his early musical education at home and his first professional engagement was as assistant to his father, a church organist. He then became a chorister at Manchester Cathedral, and at twenty was assistant organist there. He then won a composition scholarship at the Royal College of Music and studied under Stanford and Vaughan Williams. After a period of playing the organ at a Brighton cinema, he was appointed chorus-master to the British National Opera Company, and he was so successful that he was offered the conductorship of the Capetown Municipal Orchestra. On his return to England he rejoined the B.N.O.C. and eventually succeeded Sir Adrian Boult as director of the City of Birmingham Orchestra. 
Leslie Heward 's ' Nocturne ' is based on the sketches that he made for a scena of a projected opera on Peer Gynt. It illustrates that moment when Peer Gynt, after the storm at sea, lands on shore and witnesses a priest saying a prayer over a grave.

THE WEEK'S GOOD CAUSE

An appeal of behalf of THE CHELSEA HOSPITAL FOR 
WOMEN by the Rt. Rev. the LORD BISHOP OF 
BRISTOL 
When founded in 1871 the Hospital had only eight beds. In 1916 a move to larger premises in Arthur Street had to be made. 
But expansion is constantly necessary, the present waiting list is a long one, and a fresh scheme of extensions and alterations providing for a total of 130 beds is due for completion in March. The total cost will be not less than E35,000 and a considerable portion of this has still to be raised. 
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged, and should be addressed to The Rt. Rev. the Lord Bishop of Bristol, [address removed].
