'Flying Home from India'

In one of the most graphic talks of the term Captain McDermott is to describe the journey by aeroplane from Karachi to England-four thousand miles in five days. This talk is so real that listeners may well imagine that they are making the actual romantic journey, flying along the coastline of the Persian Gulf, spending the night at Sharjah in a comfortable bed, seeing the clerk in the desert checking particulars of the aeroplane under the shelter of its wing ('the only bit of shade there was '), flying over the Tigris and the Euphrates, arriving at Baghdad, reaching the Dead Sea, the Suez Canal, Marseilles, and so to England.

Hubert Clifford's Kentish Suite was awarded the W. W. Cobbett (1935) Prize in an open competition for a suite for school orchestra. Of the two movements to be played this afternoon, Dover is a hornpipe suggesting the atmosphere of the Kentish seaport, and Swift Nicks is a scherzo inspired by a reading of the exploits of a famous highwayman.
