Boccherini was one of the foremost 'cellists of the eighteenth century, and also a composer of immense industry. It used to be said that he was a fountain of which it was only necessary to turn on the tap to produce a stream of music. He left no fewer than 467 instrumental works, including twenty symphonies, all of them marked by simple, natural melodiousness and by a dignified and courtly style. He and Haydn had a mutual regard, and the relation of Boccherini's music to that of the more famous master was characterised in the saying that ' Boccherini was the wife of Haydn '.

Fables of La Fontaine
A reading from the translation of Edward Marsh , by H. S. Ede
Tonight, and again next Monday at the same time, a number of La Fontaine's fables will be read from translations made by a man of letters who must have been secretary to more distinguished statesmen than any other man in modern times. Sir Edward Marsh-he was knighted in February of this year-is now private secretary to Mr. Malcolm MacDonald and is probably best known for his secretarial services to Mr. Winston Churchill and Mr. J. H. Thomas. He is an inveterate firstnighter, published a 'Memoir of Rupert Brooke ' in 1918, and his translations of ' Fables of La Fontaine' in 1931. They are exceedingly amusing and freely adapted to everyday speech. Those that are to be read tonight are The Young Widow', ' The Lark and the Farmer ', ' The Married Couple and the Burglar ', ' The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse 'The Fox and the Stork', and The Old Maid's Marriage '.
