DOROTHY THURSBY-PELHAM
Most of us know that herrings are sold as fresh herrings, bloaters, kippers, and so on. But probably few knew that when small the plebeian herring is an aristocrat, for little herrings, with little sprats and little mackerel, make up the whitebait of Mayfair. Today Miss Thursby-Pelham is to tell their life-story.
The reason why herrings are in season throughout the year is that they spawn at different times. Various families collect and go on honeymoon trips. When they are in these shoals the fishermen catch them.
If they were dear, they would be prized more; they are the freshest that you can buy... and Miss Thursby-Pelham will tell listeners why British housewives should buy them.

Regional Variations (2)

Just a year ago. the Italian army moved across the frontier into Abyssinia, and discussion in this country ran high on the question of how the war ought to be stopped. None of the methods used succeeded in stopping the war, and now the world is faced with the problem of what to do if the threat of war again becomes acute.
This afternoon, in the second of these weekly talks in this series, David Mitrany will discuss the problems of preserving peace in the light of events in Abyssinia during the last twelve months.

This title has been chosen for a new series of broadcasts by the BBC Variety Orchestra because it is the name given by members of orchestras in Variety theatres to the period allotted to the entr'acte—a time when the orchestra may show what it can do. Intermission will be made up of novelty numbers and solo pieces. A second broadcast will be given on October 27, and a third some time in November. Charles Shadwell was for six years musical director of the Coventry Hippodrome, from which he gave regular weekly broadcasts, before joining the BBC in May to take Kneale Kelley 's place.
