Early in 1891, when Brahms went to stay with the Duke of Meiningen, he heard Muhlfeld, principal clarinet ot the Meiningen Orchestra, whose tone was as beautiful as his execution was clean and brilliant. Brahms was so impressed that he asked .Muhlfeld for a private recital at which Muhlfeld plaved many examples of clarinet music, and explained the finer technical points of his instrument.
The result was that Brahms composed four works in which the clarinet played a predominant part: two Sonatas for clarinet and piano, a Trio for clarinet, 'cello and piano, and the Quintet for clarinet and string quartet. The Clarinet Quintet in B minor may be considered Brahms's swan-song in instrumental music and at the same time the crowning achievement of his life s work.

7—'Dutch Polders and the Zuider Zee '
Captain F. McDERMOTT
From earliest times the people of Holland have waged a never-ceasing war against a tireless enemy-the sea. Today Captain F. McDermott , whose broadcasts on life in the East proved so popular in previous terms, will describe this grim battle step by step ; how, first, the sea was held in check, then gradually pushed back so that the land it covered could be utilised for cultivation ; and the final triumph of the Dutch when they actually succeeded in constructing a dam right across the Zuider Zee , thus turning it into the Ijssel Lake.
Captain McDermott will tell of his own impressions as he journeyed across this mighty dam. He will also speak of the beauty of Holland' ablaze with bulbs in the spring, and of the fun that winter brings to the quaintly-dressed little Dutch boys and girls.

H. E. PIGGOTT
Mr. H. E. Piggott is giving the talk on Music tonight instead of Dr. Malcolm Sargent. Mr. Piggott takes up the point which Dr. Sargent made in his introductory talk, that people who say that they know what they like often mean that they like what they know. He takes one of the smaller masterpieces of pianoforte literature-the E major Fugue of J. S. Bach from Book 11 of the ' Forty-Eight '-and discusses it in detail with the idea of discovering points of significance that may be missed by casual listening.
