Last week Commander Stephen King-Hall told listeners about the British Empire as it is today, and they learnt among other things the difference between a Dominion, a Crown colony, a protectorate, and a mandated territory. This morning Mr. K. C. Boswell , following the pattern of this series, is to show the growth of the British Empire from plantations to Dominions and listeners will hear about the Empire in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries.

8—' Protective Colouring of Animals '

Today Mr. C. C. Gaddum will discuss and explain the general colour scheme of wild animals, and the reason for it ; the reasons for the sombre colours of some female birds, compared with the gay colouring of the males ; ' warning colours ' in nature, i.e., how certain harmless creatures protect themselves by imitating the colour schemes of others which are dangerous and offensive; and finally, why certain animals change their colour in the winter.
Teachers will find it helpful to have either specimens or coloured illustrations of a hare, a hen pheasant and a cock pheasant, a wasp and a hover-fly, and an Arctic fox in winter, to show the class.

The Dorothy Hogben Trio: Addash Frydman (violin); John Gabalfa (violoncello); Dorothy Hogben (pianoforte)

The personnel of Dorothy Hogben's Trio consists of three distinguished musicians. Dorothy Hogben has been associated with the BBC as deputy accompanist almost from the beginning, and has played in the 'Foundations of Music' series and acted as musical director for over sixty 'Ridgeway Parades'. Addash Frydman is well known as a soloist in Poland, Belgium, and England, and his finished and expressive playing has been highly praised by all the leading critics. John Gabalfa comes from Wales. He won a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music where he secured the Piatti prize for 'cello playing. He completed his studies under Casals' old master, M. Alexanian, in Paris, and since that time has played frequently in England and on the Continent. The programme of the Dorothy
Hogben Trio includes a Trio in one movement by Phyllis James, who is also well known as a singer in London and the provinces.

After securing his M.A. at Oxford, Sumner Austin, who was born in London, studied singing in Germany for four years. At the outbreak of war he was interned in Ruhleben Camp, where he did a great deal of singing and producing. In 1919 Mr. Austin joined the Carl Rosa Company and the Old Vic. For many years now Mr. Austin has been the principal baritone at Sadler's Wells, and since the season of 1932-33 he has been responsible for a number of important productions there.

This talk will trace some of the adult man s mam problems back to his childhood in both the family and the school. It will suggest a new approach to education which might avoid some of the conflicts of later life.
