A Play by L. DU GARDE PEACH
In an earlier play in this series Mr. L. du Garde Peach showed you the Romans on the Dee. Today he is to take you about a hundred miles farther north to Newcastle, and show you the Romans there.
Most of you have probably heard of Hadrian's Wall, and many of your parents listened to the talk about it by Mr. Geoffrey Boumphrey a fortnight ago. Ask them to tell you about it. The wall runs from Carlisle on the west to Wallsend, just beyond Newcastle, on the east, and was built by the Romans as a line of defence against the raiders from the north.
Nearly two thousand years ago the Romans were building ships on the Tyne to fight against the Danes, and, as you all know, modern ships of steel are being built there today.
The past and the present are linked up in this play with all Mr. du Garde Peach's skill. He knows how to make history interesting and how to tell a story. You will hear how Claudius, all those years ago, seemed to see into the future, though, as always happens, he was laughed at then.

Filson Young is to tell listeners why he is learning to fly. Next week he takes his first lesson, and every Thursday throughout July and August he is to come to the microphone and describe his experiences.
