' Should the Banks be Nationalised ? 'A Discussion between the Honble.

YET ANOTHER SERIES to end this evening has been one of the longest and most varied, having commenced as long ago as October 4. Subjects that have been reviewed have been the Civil Service (four broadcasts), Local Government (four). Voluntary Social Service (four), the Navy (four), the Churches in National Life (four), and three broadcasts on the City of London have already been given, the fourth and last being the discussion due to take place this evening.
Mr. G. D. H. Cole , Reader, in Economics in the University of Oxford, will argue that banks should be nationalised, and the Hon. R. H. Brand , Managing Director of Lazard Brothers and Co., and Director of Lloyd's Bank, will argue that they should remain as they are.

DELIUS is a late convert to chamber music. In his early days, as with all true romantic composers, he had no great liking for a medium which tends to constrict the wings of inspiration. Moreover, his sense of harmony, which somewhat over-rules his feeling for counterpoint, does not easily lend itself to sonata and other set forms. Nothing of this, however, entirely detracts from the beauty with which Delius clothes all his ideas, and chamber music players include Delius in their repertory on terms of equality with the more orthodox sonata composers. Of his chamber music works, this Sonata, and particularly the 'Cello Sonata which concludes this programme, are considered the best of his essays in this form.

Serenade (Hassan) Elegy
'HASSAN', a play of the East, was written by the late James Elroy Flecker , poet and dramatist. The incidental music was composed by his friend Delius, to whom the atmosphere of the play appealed. It was beautifully staged by Basil Dean at His Majesty's Theatre in 1923, and had a run of 281 performances. This is an arrangement of the Serenade, one of the many striking numbers from the music which has been made into a concert suite by Delius's friend and sometime amanuensis, Eric Feaby.

JOHN IRELAND has written very little orchestral music ; indeed, he has not written a great deal in any form in relation to his reputation. He composes only when he has something to say and he is satisfied to publish only when he is convinced that he has said it as well as he is able.
Of the orchestral works he has so far issued, one in 1913, one in 1921, this prelude, The Forgotten Rite, is the earlier. It is very largely a poem of Nature. It has its base in a dim age when nature loomed more fully in men's lives than it does at present, and the mood of the music is well in keeping with Ireland's outlook. It was born of impressions received during a holiday in the Channel Islands. The music proceeds with a slow, stately stride for the most part and there is an element of mystery throughout. More than one climax is reached it is true, but in the end the music dies away softly in the distant memories of a dim age.
JOAQUIM TURINA is one of the youngest of the brilliant modem Spanish school. He studied, as most of his colleagues have done, in Paris at the Schola Cantorum under Vincent d'Indy. This work has a link with England, since it is dedicated to Enrique Fernandez Arbos, who for many years was a Professor at the Royal College of Music, and who still possesses more friends in England than almost any Continental conductor. The titles of the movements give a clue to the music ; Triana is a suburb of Seville, and the music is a picture of holiday-making in that place. The Procession, although a separate movement, is actually intended to be part of the fête.

X-RAYS AND radio WAVES differ from light in degree and not in kind. All can be described as ether waves, but the X-rays are thousands of times shorter than light waves, while the radio waves are hundreds of millions of times longer. It is interesting to know that the differences in their behaviour are due to their differences in magnitude.
In discussing these points
Sir William Bragg will conclude his last talk in this series, and the many who have listened and wish to know still more about this subject are now in a pesition to read with all the greater understanding his famous book ' The Universe of Light'
