Isaac Grossman has prospered. He was brought up in the strict faith of his forefathers; he worked hard, and made money and now in his old age he looks back. There is one guilty episode that does not just trouble him; it has become obsessive. His children, not strictly brought up themselves, can only guess at the weight of guilt such an upbringing can lay on a man.
