A wildebeest has been shot and taken to a waterhole in the Etosha Pan Game Park-a vast nature reserve on the borders of South West Africa and the Portuguese territory of Angola. As night falls, a pride of nine lions led by Castor —old, magnificent, black-maned—comes to feed. Sitting in a truck some fifteen or twenty feet from the chained-down carcass, Patrick O'Malley , using a microphone as a camera, describes the extraordinary ritual of the evening meaL
