7— * The Proposal'
Produced by Martyn C. Webster
Accused of having driven Rosanna Spearman to her death in the Shivering
Sand, Sergeant Cuff no longer conceals from Lady Verinder his conviction that her own daughter is the culprit in the disappearance of the Moonstone. Angered by his words Lady Verinder leaves to join Rachel and prove the falseness of his accusation. She does not return, but by letter dismisses Sergeant Cuff from her house and from further investigations.
As he takes his farewell of Gabriel Betteredge, the Sergeant predicts that before very long the Moonstone will be heard of again and that events will move from Yorkshire to London. Gabriel is surprised to receive almost at once a letter from Lady Verinder ordering him to close the house and follow her and her daughter to London.
