Willie is rescued by Sandy and Jock from a deep gorge. Later the members of the expedition are guided by a nomad to Kyirong, the City of Joy. Sharong, the Viceroy, tells them how to find Chagpori (the Iron Mountain), where the ' Book of Wisdom ' is thought to be kept in a monastery. In camp one night they discover they are surrounded by flaming torches.
