Young Alan Fairford is now very heavily involved in the affairs of his friend Darsie Latimer. Fairford, rescued (with other ' contraband ') by Skipper Nanty Ewart of the Jumping Jenny from the Cumberland coastguards, finds asylum with Miss Seraphina and Miss Angelica Arthuret. There he meets Father Buonaventure, and, though Fairford knows it not, this Father Buonaventure is Prince Charles Edward Stewart. Meanwhile, what of Darsie Latimer himself and his Miss Greenmantle?
