Innocent little orphans being swindled out of inheritances by wicked and scheming guardians were familiar fauna in the hunting grounds of the Victorian melodramatists, and some banal varieties survive in the lesser literature of today. Maria, the ten-year-old heroine of Mistress Masham's Repose, shares their predicament but scarcely their environment-for
T. H. White adopts the situation only as subject for caricature.
The atmosphere, indeed, is often evocative of the work of two notable but vastly different cartoonists. The great, gloomy and decrepit mansion, with its dungeons and torture chamber, where Maria Jives with her sinister governess-this is the world of Charles Addams and his hilarious monsters. Outside, on the woodland estate and in the neighbouring areas (Malplaquet-in-the-Mould, Duke's Doddery and so on), the design is after Emett's quaint, antediluvian civilisation. And on the Isle of Repose in the lake at Malplaquet, there is a third world of even moi e peculiar fancy-a world of Little People, not six inches high.
Maria's discovery of their secret, and the whimsical mingling of all three worlds, provide this afternoon's gentle fantasy. Kenneth A. Hurren
