Appeal on behalf of the British Rheumatic Association, by the Vice-Chairman, Air Vice-Marshal F. P. Don , O.B.E.
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and should be addressed to [address removed]
The British Rheumatic Association is a recently formed voluntary body working on behalf of rheumatic sufferers, of whom there are some three million in Great Britain. Up-to-date treatment facilities are scarce; the Association makes known to rheumatic sufferers those available, and is pressing for more. Social amenities are arranged for the lonely home-bound; mobile chairs and appliances are provided; training for the disabled is arranged, and colleague organisations co-operate. Funds are needed to extend these services, also to provide flatlets for the elderly disabled of limited means and hostel beds for those needing treatment-both with nursing care.

Composers as diverse as Weber, Puccini, and Busoni have been attracted to the story of Turandot, the Chinese princess who had many suitors of royal birth, but would agree to marry only the one who could guess three riddles she propounded to him; the other suitors being beheaded. The story formed the basis of a play by Count Carlo Gozzi. an eighteenth-century Italian dramatist, and when this was produced by in Reinhardt Berlin in 1911, Busoni wrote incidental music for it. Later he used his music for a short opera with spoken dialogue.
IIdebrando Pizzetti. the most eminent of the older generation of Italian composers, was bom at Parma in 1880; he is now Director of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In Italy he is best known for his operas; in this country it is chiefly his chamber music (notably the Violin Sonata) that has made its mark. His output for orchestra, however, is considerable and includes three symphonies. His ' Summer Concerto,' which dates from
1928, was first broadcast in this country before the war. The score includes parts for piano, celeste, two harps, glockenspiel, and tubular bells. There are three movements. The first, ' Mattutino ' (Early Morning), is exultant in mood; the second, ' Notturno,' includes a long flute solo; the finale takes the form of a brilliant ' Gagliarda ' and leads to a quiet close.
