In 1665 when the Great Plague was spreading from London to the countryside, it reached the little village of Eyam in Derbyshire. The inhabitants agreed to stay in their village lest they should carry the infection to other districts. This story illustrates Christ's commandment: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself' (St. Matthew 22. v. 39).

This episode tells how Jeremy Shafto , now in the power of Miss Kyte, is brought before the secret tribunal of the League of the Spread Eagle. Jeremy has read about secret societies and thinks that he knows what to expect. He soon discovers, however, that these terrorists are modern in their methods and have rather original ideas about such functions as midnight meetings.
