Magellan was Portuguese, but it was as the leader of a Spanish expedition that, in 1520. he discovered the strait that now bears his name, and sailed through it -into the Pacific. Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines, but one of his ships returned to Spain. The members of her crew were the first men to sail round the world.
