Paul Dukas , one of the leading French composers of the late nineteenth century, is scarcely known in this country, except for his symphonic scherzo ' L'Apprenti Sorcier ' which had its first London performance in 1899. The score is prefaced by a French version of Goethe's poem ' The Sorcerer's Apprentice,' which tells the story of the apprentice who seizes the chance of his master's absence to pronounce the magic spell that sets the broomstick to work carrying water to the house. But he finds, when it is too late, that he has forgotten the words which undo the spell, and the carrying of water goes on until the house is well-nigh engulfed. In desperation the apprentice seizes an axe and chops the stick in half, only to find that his predicament is twice as bad as before, since both halves carry on the work with equal energy. The master magician returns-the tremendous blast of the brass instruments which announces that is unmistakable-iust in time to avert final catastrophe.
