Winifred Dartie , seeking a divorce from her runaway husband Monty, finds him at home when she returns from a shopping expedition- She reports to Soames. He, however, is more concerned with his own relationship with his wife, Irene, and goes to Paris to see her. When Irene refuses to return to him, he goes to Madame Lamotte and tells her of his intentions towards her daughter Annette, explaining that he is seeking a divorce.
Meanwhile, Jolyon receives a' shock when his daughter Holly tells him she is secretly engaged to Val Dartie , Soames's nephew.
