Brother Lawrence was a young lay brother who lived in a monastery in France about three hundred years ago. He had a dull and humdrum job in the monastery kitchen but, amid all the noise and clatter, he formed the habit of keeping God continually in his thoughts and wrote one of the most famous books about prayer, ' The Practice of the Presence of God.' His story illustrates our Lord's saying: ' Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth ' (St. Matthew 5, v. 5).
