and summary of today's programmes for the Forces
with John Cockerill (harp)
a programme of new gramophone records
at the theatre organ
One of the busiest of wartime theatre organists, Robinson Cleaver finds his days fully occupied in travelling from cinema to cinema of the circuit for which he works and collecting money for charity. By autographing records he has raised a good deal of money for various Spitfire funds in the North.
Robinson Cleaver first won fame at the Regal Cinema, Bexley Heath. For four-and-a-half years he was organist at the Piccadilly, Manchester, broadcasting from there with the orchestra. Later he took an appointment as solo organist at the Lonsdate Cinema, Carlisle. He is now with the Bernstein group of theatres, and wherever the name ' Granada ' is to be seen, there, sooner or later, will also be heard Robinson Cleaver at the organ.

Smetana (1824-1884) was the pioneer of Czech national music. His cycle of six symphonic poems collectively entitled ' My Country ' is, as the title suggests, in praise of Bohemia. ' From Bohemia's Woods and Fields' is the fourth symphonic poem of the cycle. The music sets out to describe a traveller's sensations on his arrival in the country. He meets a village maiden. At noon he rests in the woods, and then proceeds onwards until he comes to a village. A hymn reminds him of the piety of the peasants, and a jolly dance suggests their simple sense of fun.
